The following themes are discussed, with a specific focus on South Africa:

  • how the aggregate economy is measured and functions (including the multiplier model)
  • unemployment and the role of fiscal policy
  • inflation and the role of monetary policy
  • the money market and the role the central bank plays
  • the role of technological change in the economy and how it affects income inequality
  • the role of globalisation (international trade, migration and investment) in the aggregate economy
