Professor Reza C Daniels, who has been Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences since November 2025, has also been appointed as Professor in the Department of Economics. On Tuesday he delivered his professorial inaugural lecture at the university.

The title of his lecture was Data + theory = policy? The applied economist’s epistemological challenge. Prof Daniels addressed the central question of how economists can contribute to addressing critical policy questions, ultimately to improve economic outcomes such as growth and employment while limiting negative effects of economic shocks and failures. He argues that to do this task effectively, economists must contend not only with economic theory, but also with accurate data that can inform an understanding of underlying economic conditions and challenges. He discussed various pitfalls and outlined a model for effective contributions by economists to policy.
