Posted by Johan Fourie on 2008-10-24

In 2007, the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University was selected as one of three departments worldwide to bid for the 2012 World Economic History Congress. This event is held every three years and hosts the largest gathering of economic historians, with the previous event held in Helsinki in 2006 and the next planned for Utrecht in 2009.

Two members, the current president Riitta Hjerppe (University of Helsinki) and vice-president Jan-Luiten van Zanden (Utrecht University), of the International Economic Historians Association visited Stellenbosch on Friday to determine whether the bid meets the required standards. The two competing bids are from Sydney and Glasgow. The IEHA will announce the winning bid during November 2008.
