Economics Department Annual Prize-Giving Ceremony
The Department of Economics hosted its annual welcoming and prize-giving ceremony on the 18th of March 2025. The event was aimed at giving recognition to students who excelled in their academic studies in Economics in 2024. The awarded prizes were sponsored by Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA) and the event's guest speaker was Tracey-lee Solomon from the Bureau for Economic Research (BER).
Uné Beneke and David te Roller were tied in first place for the best first-year Economics student. Stella Erin Lazarus placed second in the first-year group. The best performing second-year students were Vera Folscher (first place) and Gia Zinzi Zahra Antoni (second place). William Alexander Horn placed first for best third-year student in Economics and Sarah Abi Rowe placed second in this category.
The event also awarded the SA Cloete medal to the top performing students in the undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts. William Alexander Horn was awarded the medal for the best third-year Economics student with an average mark of 86%. Sarah Christine Woolard and Angela Euston-Brown were both awarded the SA Cloete medal for top performance in postgraduate studies. Both students obtained an average mark of 84%.
The Sampie Terreblanche Prize for best postgraduate assingment was awarded to Angela Euston-Brown for her thesis titled "Assessing assessment: An exploratory analysis of school-based assessment before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Gauteng". Angela achieved a final mark of 85% and was supervised by Prof. Servaas van der Berg.
