{"id":774,"date":"2018-04-30T10:40:05","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T10:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ekon.sun.ac.za\/sampieterreblanche\/?p=774"},"modified":"2018-04-30T10:40:31","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T10:40:31","slug":"stellenbosch-university-pays-tribute-to-prof-sampie-terreblanche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ekon.sun.ac.za\/sampieterreblanche\/index.php\/stellenbosch-university-pays-tribute-to-prof-sampie-terreblanche\/","title":{"rendered":"Stellenbosch University pays tribute to Prof Sampie Terreblanche"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"4f0c6cd2aaff79f40a891a24a39d8ba41e147977\" class=\"article-widget article-widget-text\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Stellenbosch University has paid tribute to veteran political economist and academic Professor Johannes &#8220;Sampie&#8221; Terreblanche\u201a who died on Saturday afternoon at the age of 84 following a brief battle with brain cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great sadness that I express Stellenbosch University\u2019s deepest condolences to the family of Prof Sampie Terreblanche\u201a\u201d said Prof Wim de Villiers\u201a Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe honour him as a legendary political economist; much loved inspirational lecturer for thousands of our students\u201a and one of Stellenbosch University\u2019s critical voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terreblanche received an honorary doctorate from Stellenbosch University on December 10 2015.<\/p>\n<p>His academic career at SU spanned half of the 90-year existence of its Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) Faculty. He was honoured for &#8220;his outstanding contributions as profound analyst of socio-economic systems and his fearless advocacy for the end of apartheid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years\u201a he had a lasting impact on many an economics student at SU\u201a De Villiers said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that De Villiers\u2019 emphasis on social amelioration for the broader community served as a running theme in his scholarly work. As a member of the then Commission of Inquiry into Matters Relating to the Coloured Population Group (1973\u20131976) \u2013 the Erika Theron Commission \u2013 he became deeply affected by the problem of structural poverty. This became a constant influence on his views of South Africa&#8217;s political economy\u201a manifesting in a number of his publications\u201a which included 12 books and over 30 articles and book chapters. Even academic colleagues of dissenting views acknowledged the outstanding quality of his work\u201a De Villiers said.<\/p>\n<p>De Villiers said Terreblanche\u2019s contribution to political transformation was aimed at social improvement for the majority.
